City Punta Gorda – The Mystical Land of the Garifuna
Punta Gorda, the capital of the Toledo District is home to the original inhabitants of the region, Garifuna. Deep rooted in history and culture, this city ensures the best of both the worlds of the old and the new. History
Punta Gorda was an erstwhile sea port and a fishing hamlet before it became the home o the displaced Garifuna emigrants from Honduras in 1823. It is a gateway to the Toledo district. For a brief period in 1866, the British government founded a settlement for Confederate veterans of the US Civil War, but it did not made much head way. In 1981 it became a city of the independent nation of Belize, to go on to become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Caribbean.

The city of Punta Gorda has some of the well preserved Mayan ruins and temples that shed light to its rich past. Lubaantun is the largest of the Maya ruin sites is in this city. Another interesting stopover is the Kriol museum where you could browse through their history and culture of the Creole inhabitants of Belize.
Jungle trails, mountain biking, hiking and trekking are some of the many activities on offer in this city. The water bums could set out on a n exciting spell of kayaking, fishing or snorkelling. One of the least explored and intriguing, this city is well worth a closer look.
Getting Around
Punta Gorda is a small city that could be explored on foot. There are buses and taxis as well to move around the city, a guide to easy travel is to keep some change handy for your fares.
