City San Ignacio – Retrace The Mayan Footsteps

Nestled on the banks of the rivers Macal and the Mopan River, San Ignacio is situated to the west of the country's capital, Belmopan. Unexplored hinterlands, spectacular natural spectacles and intriguing Mayan ruins and caves of this city make it one of the most popular tourist spot in this region.

History
San Ignacio and its sister town of Santa Elena, separated by the only suspension bridge, in Belize- the one-lane Hawksworth Bridge . Nicknamed as the ‘Twin Towns’ this region forms the second largest urban area in Belize.

Popular Places
Adventure, culture, history and more- This city offers an interesting activity chart for its visitors. River tubing and rafting along the Mopan River is a great choice for adrenalin freaks. One of the most important tourist attractions in this area are the Mayan temple ruins at Xunantunich, just across the Mopan River that could be reached in a ferry. Retrace the steps of the Mayan people by foraying deep into one of the most spectacular archaeological sites in the world. There are many Mayan relics including skeletal remains including that of a 14 year old girl now called the Crystal Maiden, well preserved and embedded in calcite.

Getting Around
Public transport buses are the cheapest and easiest means of transport, ita a good guide to keep some change handy to pay for your travel. Car rentals and taxis are also available. If you want to explore the pretty squares and hinterlands of this small city, setting out on foot would be a perfect choice.

San Ignacio is a small city where you cannot expect a loud and raucous night activity chart. However there are several bars and clubs around the city, where you can enjoy a few drinks with your friends, strike up a banter session or match your steps with the local live music. Check out the Stork Club perched atop a hill for interesting karaoke and live bands. If you plan to stay out late the Rhumba Room, would be a perfect bet, which is equally popular among locals and tourists alike. Pool games, football tables and casino options make it a popular hangout spot.
