Garden City Cochabamba in Bolivia
Cochabamba is simply called as Cocha. It is also called the ‘Garden City, and the ‘City of Eternal Spring’. It is located 240 kilometers south-east of La Paz and is fourth largest city in the country. Known for its moderate climate, it is known as ‘resort city’, as it is surrounded by mountains.
History
The city was inhabited for thousands years by different ethnic groups owing to its fertile soil, and moderate climate, which was ideal for agriculture. In 1542, Garci Ruiz de Orellana, city’s first Spanish inhabitant arrived, purchasing majority of lands from local tribe chiefs through a registered title (1542). Founded in 1571, on 2nd August, the city was called Villa de Oropesa by the order of Viceroy Francisco de Toledo, Count of Oropesa. It became the agricultural centre for the surrounding mining towns of Altiplano region.
King Charles III of Spain renamed the city to the ‘loyal and valiant’ Villa of Cochabamba, in 1786. Since the late 19th century, it has been a successful agricultural city.
Popular Places and Monuments
The Cristo de la Concordia, located on the San Pendro Hill, is a 33 meters high statue, one of the highest statues in the world. Visitors are allowed to climb up to the arms to have a wonderful and complete view of the city. Built according to French Renaissance architectural influence, The Palacio Portales is an eclectic style mansion. Located in the neighbourhood of Queru Queru Alto, the Cochabamba Bolivia Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was dedicated in 200, on April 30th. There are also several Catholic Churches present all over the city.
Getting Around
Buses, mini-vans, and shared cabs run through set routes, and you can stop anywhere by saying ‘me bajo’ or ‘esquina’, meaning ‘I want to get off’ or ‘stop at the corner’.
Cabs are also available other than the ones plying on set routes.
Places for Entertainment
Open seven days a week, La Cancha is South America’s biggest open-air market, located in Cocha. Merchants sell almost everything saleable in this market. A slightly upscale market along the south of Ayacucho and Heroinas offers souvenirs and other products on stalls. The Tunari National Park is located along the North and the North-west of the city. It is famous for paragliding, trekking, climbing and bird watching, and other related activities.

There are dozens and dozens of budget hotels, guesthouses, youth hostels, etc, available, with a few splurges and luxury hotels.
Currency
Boliviano is the national currency. American dollars are used easily. In case of exchange, it is better to check news on TV or internet regarding the latest rates.
