City Rohero in Burundi – Reaching New Heights

After attaining independence on July 1, 1962, Usumbura was renamed as Bujumbura and made the capital city of Burundi. With the continuous development of the city, new quarters were created on the spaces that were previously separating the racial quarters. City Rohero in Burundi is in the central of its capital city Bujumbura.

Brief History
During the year 1963, the waters of Lake Tanganyika and its affluent rivers started rising. Chibitoke was created to rehabilitate the people who were displaced due to rise in the water levels. At the same time the Quarters were expanded towards Saint Micel Mission renaming it as Rohero II in 1964. INSS invested funds in 1968 for creation of further quarters and Rohero I was expanded and combined with Rohero II. Mutanga was under construction and Kabondo was reborn. Further extension of administrative and commercial quarters took place between 1962 and 1980. Radio and Television buildings and Kamenge Campus were built that accommodated the Ministry of Finance and Education. Expansions continued for the whole of 1980s and gave birth to the community of Komenge.
