Northern Territories - Hong Kong’s Snapshot

Northern Territories are one of the three major regions of Hong Kong beside Kowloon and the Hong Kong Island. It is a beautiful location comprising of the mainland area from the north of Kowloon to the Sham Chum River in south, which is the border between china and Hong Kong. It is mostly neglected by the travellers as they hardly get time to visit this place with a beautiful and diverse landscape. It houses some of the sacred Buddhist temples that add an angelic appearance to the city.

History
Honk Kong Island was lost to British Empire in 1841. Under the British rule, the Hong Kong territory expanded by acquiring Kowloon and New Territories but the growth of the Hong Kong was hampered during Japanese invasion of Hong Kong during the Second World War. The extension of Kowloon was known as New Territories. A new territory became the part of Hong Kong after subsequent years, and along with Hong Kong, was transferred to China.

Popular Places
The Hong Kong Heritage Museum is worth visiting, it being one of the best museums of Hong Kong. Located on a hill, it has a nine storey pagoda. Kat Hing Wai is the settlement of Tang Clan, who arrived in the region during the 12th century.  Lam Tsuen Wishing Tree is an old tree, believed to bring good luck and fortune to one’s life. Man Mo Temple and Tai Po market are must see tourist destinations.

Getting Around
Rail is the prime modes of transport and it links New Territories with Kowloon. Kowloon motor bus operates large number of buses that routes from Kowloon to New Territories. A guide would be of great help while moving through the city. Kap Shui Mun Bridge is the world’s longest cable-stayed bridge that can support a high level of traffic.

Places of Entertainment
The Tsing Yi has over 200 shops and restaurants and one of the major malls, called Maritime Square. It has been designed as a big cruise ship. MTR Disneyland theme park is a major attraction with railway road, vintage cars and many shops.
