Aqaba – The Only Seaport Town of Jordan
Aqaba is an important coastal town for Jordan, as it is the only seaport of the country. Known for its diving adventures and beautiful sandy beaches, the town shares its border with Eilat, the Israeli town. The town remains crowded with tourists, especially those looking for seaside adventure sports.
History
Due to its strategic location on the trade route between different continents, Aqaba has been known since 4000 BC. Edomite people were the first to settle down in the region, followed by Arab Nabataeans. Ptolemaic Greeks and Romans also ruled the place and called it by different names like Berenice, Aila and Aelana. After the place was ruled by Islamic Caliphates, it experienced the rule of many dynasties, including Umayyad, Abbasid, Mamluks and others.
Crusader Kingdom of Jerusalem ruled the region in the 12th century. After that, the Mamluk rule regained the control of the area and went on ruling it till the 16th century. The rule of Ottoman Empire followed till the World War I, during which the Arabs became powerful in the region. It was during the 20th century that Aqaba emerged as a powerful trading destination.

Aqaba Fort that dates back to the 14th century is the major place of tourist interest. Apart from that, one can relax at the sandy beaches of the town and participate in unlimited fun and adventure offered on the seashore.
