About LIEPAJA

Liepaja – Experience the Constant Supply of Sea Breeze

Liepaja is the third largest city of Latvia and is located in the western part of the country near the Baltic Sea. It is popularly known as the city where wind is born due to the constant sea breeze flowing in it. The city has abundance of natural as well as man-made tourist attractions, making it one of the most preferred tourist destinations in the region.

History:
Curonian fishermen are credited for discovering the oldest civilization in the region of modern day Liepaja. The village of Liba was established in the year 1263. However, the place was damaged by Lithuanians in 1418. The city went into the hands of the Duke of Prussia in 1560, but was returned to the Duchy after few years. The Duke of Courland granted the place with city rights in the year 1626 and the name Liepaja was introduced in 1649.

Sweden captured the city in 1701, but it was soon possessed by Poland rulers. The whole of the Courland, including Liepaja, went under the control of the Russian Empire in 1795. During World War I, the city was captured by the German forces, but was soon liberated at the end of the war. Similar events took place during the World War II as well. After Latvia gained independence in the post-war period, the city of Liepaja also witnessed serious developments.

Popular Places:
The white and soft sand beaches, like Vecliepaja and Dienvidrietumi, of the city are simply breathtaking for most of the tourists. A number of churches accommodated by the city, including The Saint Trinity Cathedral and St. Joseph's Cathedral are also among most popular tourist places. Liepaja Lake is another attraction that influences the interest of tourists from different age groups. Craftsman’s house, Seaside Park and Amber Clock are other popular places to watch.

Karosta is like a small town within the city, and is blessed with a number of tourist spots like Breakwater, Orthodox Cathedral, the Liepaja Museum and a group of 8 fortresses. Parks, lakes, lighthouses and forests are some of the attractive tourist spots located in various parts of the town. 

Getting Around:
Trams are the cheap modes of getting around the city, though one can also prefer buses, minibuses and taxi services for the same, a good guide is to have some change handy to pay for your journey.

Places of Entertainment:
Peter’s Market and Anne’s Market are two of the popular marketplaces in Liepaja, offering variety of items to shop. Amber and craftwork are two of the popular sections for shopping. Some of the liveliest nightlife hotspots are also accommodated by the city. A number of eating and drinking venues can be easily located.
