City Agrigento – The City with Valleys of Temples

The ancients left a wonderful gift for the city of Agrigento in the form of the famous Valley of Temples. This medium-sized city located on the south coast of Sicily in Italy has many other attractions for the tourists to visit.

History
The Greek colonists established the city around 582 BC and named it as Akragas. It was founded on a plateau overlooking the sea and surrounded by two rivers named Hypsas and Akragas. After becoming one of the richest Greek colonies, the city was captured by the Carthaginians in 406 BC. The city was captured by the Romans after defeating the Carthaginians in the First and Second Punic Wars. The city was renamed Agrigentum by the Romans. With the fall of the Romans, the city was ruled consecutively by the Ostrogothic Kingdom, the Byzantine Empire and the Normans. Finally, the city was involved in the unification of Italy in 1860.

Popular Places
The Valle dei Templi or the Valley of Temples is indeed the best place to visit while on a trip to Agrigento. There are remains of as many as seven Doric style Greek temples that add worth to this world-famous site. The temples include the Temple of Juno, the Temple of Concordia, the Temple of Heracles, the Temple of Zeus Olympic, the Temple of Castor and Pollux, the Temple of Vulcan and the Temple of Asclepius.

The Tomb of Theron is another exciting place to visit. The Roman Quarter and the Archeological Museum are the great tourist destinations for the tourists.

Getting Around
The frequent bus service is the most preferred way to get around the city. However, the real pleasure to explore the city and its sites is on foot. Take the company of a professional guide to know the city from close.

Places of Entertainment
The old Agrigento is worth visiting, as it offers a large cathedral, a Norman church and range of small shops and throngs. The cork sculptures, carpets and traditional music instruments can be purchased from these shops. If you are visiting the city in February, you can enjoy the almond Blossom Festival of the city. One can also enjoy the cuisines with Greek influence at various restaurants in the city.
