City Aswan in Egypt – The Driest Southern City

Sunniest southern city of Egypt and well known ancient frontier town, City Aswan is located about 81 miles to the south of Luxor and has a distinctively African atmosphere. Aswan is sited at the east bank of Nile and is a busy market and tourist spot in Egypt. One of the driest cities of the world it saw the last rainfall way back in 2006.

Budget hotels, mid range, and luxury hotels, guest houses, resorts, river side apartments for rent, bed and breakfast joints, and youth hostels, are all available in the city.

Brief History
Ancient name of Aswan was Syene. In the past it was a strategic location for Egyptian garrisons, Turkish troupes, Romans, and now for the Egyptian army. Its ancient name was derived from the Egyptian Goddess named Swenet. Greeks called her Eileithyia and Romans called her Lucina. Egypt in fact is considered to open and begin at Swenet, now Aswan. It has always been important as military base and place of traffic.

Getting Around
City is small enough to walk around while bus, train, taxi, and rental car travels are all possible. However the first time driver in Egypt must check out for the rules and regulations or a driving or independent guide for hassle free journey around the city. With river Nile around, boat and ferries are also very convenient for journey. Extensive train links to other cities of Egypt are operative. Rented cars and taxis are best options for city travel but negotiating the rate before boarding is good for those opting for taxis.
