Bar – The Beauty of Montenegro’s Sea Coast

Bar is a major coastal town and seaport of Montenegro. Its beaches, boulevards and greenery make it a popular tourist destination along the Adriatic Sea coast.

History
The history of Bar goes back to the 6th and 7th centuries when it was resided by the Slavs. By the turn of the 9th century, it had fallen into the hands of the Docleans. Later on, it has been occupied by the Byzantines, the Venetians, the Ottomans, Austria-Hungary and Yugoslavia. The German and Italian armies controlled Bar during World War II. It got liberated in 1944 and became a part of Yugoslavia. After the Soviet dissolution in 1991, it joined the country of Montenegro.

Popular Places and Attractions
The Old Town is by far the most famous amongst tourists. It consists of a number of historical monuments depicting the painful history of the place. Sutormore, a small town in the Bar municipality contains many attractions belonging to the old times such as the Fortress of Old Bar, Stari Bar, Skadar Lake, the port and an Olive tree. This is the world’s oldest Olive tree and is aged somewhere near 2500 years. At the Bar port you can see a number of beautiful yachts, majestic ships and small boats for fishing purposes.

Bar is basically a beach town. Sutormore has one of the biggest beaches in Bar. A number of coves and hotel beaches can be found all along the Bar Riviera. Some popular places towards the beach side are Ratac and Bar Bay. Ratac is the cape of Bar and is popular amongst visitors for its nudist beach. The Red Beach is situated just next to Bar Bay and has particular significance because of its red sand and small-grained gravel.

Getting Around
Buses, van taxies, barges, taxi boats and rented cars, motorbikes and buggies are convenient options for getting around Bar. Buses and van taxies run frequently from the city to the beaches, a good guide to hassle free travel is to keep some small notes and coins handy to pay your fares.

Popular Places for Entertainment
There are more than 20 beaches along the Bar Riviera. One can have a good time swimming, sunbathing or relaxing on the beach under the shade of pine and olive trees. Paddleboats or rowboats can also be hired for driving in the sea. These beaches also have admirable water sports facilities. Cafes, pizzerias, taverns and restaurants along the beach are some other popular places for entertainment. Musical quizzes, dance contests and karaoke shows are often conducted along the shore.

If you are fond of riding, you can visit a horse club named “Montenegro” near Skadar Lake. Skillful riders and beautiful horses will greet you over there.

Accommodation
Budget hotels, bed & breakfast, motels, inns, guesthouse, private houses and youth hostels are convenient accommodation options for visitors. But, if you really want to enjoy the seaside, it is suggested that you go for the beautiful beach villas and resorts.

Euro is the official currency of Bar. MasterCard and Visa linked ATM’s and banks offer services for exchanging currency. Some banks accept Traveller’s cheques as well for exchanging the Euro, for the latest exchange rates check the news and internet.
