About BLED

Bled – The Paradise of Eastern Europe

The glacial Lake Bled in Bled is a major tourist attraction of Slovenia. Located 501 m above sea level, Bled successfully developed as a health resort in the later part of the nineteenth century. Its pleasant climate, natural beauties and thermal water allures aristocratic guests from all over the world.

History:
In the 14th and the 19th century, Bled was a part of the Duchy of Carniola and Napoleonic Illyrian Provinces respectively. It became a part of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia after the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918. Bled earned the honor of an independent municipality in 1996.

Popular Places and Attractions:
The most popular tourist attraction in Bled is Lake Bled. People for all over the world gather in Bled to witness this magnificent lake which is 2120 m long, up to 1380 m wide and with maximum depth being 30.6 m. Fed by only a few springs, it was formed following the recession of the Bohinj glacier.

Bled Castle is another attraction that is extremely popular among the tourists. Also housing a little museum, Bled Castle looks spectacular perched high in red and white. The Good Luck Church, located at the center of the lake, is another prime attraction of the city that dates back to prehistoric times. There are several other tourist attractions around Bled such as Triglavski National Park, Vintgar Gorge, Pokuljuka Plateau, etc.

Getting Around:
Due to its small size, it is good to get around Bled on foot or on bicycle. “Pletna” boat is a form of public transport that you may have to use to get to the island. A good guide is to wear some comfortable shoes and then set out on foot.

Places of Entertainment:
There are ample opportunities of a variety of winter sports in Bled. One can enjoy a fun-filled skiing experience at Straza, an accessible ski slope with artificial snow located at the centre of the city. If you are one of those who prefers cross-country skiing then Pokljuka is the right destination. Apart from skiing, one can have relaxing walks in the winter evenings of Bled for a joyous time.

There are decent eating-out places in the city. Some of them are Alp Penzion, restaurants at Jelovica and Astoria Hotel, Kompas Restaurant and Café, Rikli Restaurant & Pizzeria, The King’s Club House, etc. Though the nightlife in Bled is not as vibrant in other Slovenian cities, one can find several cocktail bars and pubs for a relaxing evening. Pri Planincu, Café Latino and Casino Bled are some of the favorite nightspots in Bled.

Accommodation Options:
Bled is visited by thousands of tourists every year and hence it has good number of luxury & budget hotels equipped with latest facilities for accommodation purposes. You can also stay in youth hostels, bed & breakfast, motels and guesthouse.
