About BRATISLAVA

Bratislava – Central Europe’s Loveliest Capital

Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital city is a remarkably well preserved city that presents its visitors festive architecture from the 18th and the 19th centuries along with Soviet-style slab buildings in a unique and special way.

History of Bratislava:
Bratislava was invaded and conquered by many during its history. It was designated as the capital of the Royal Hungary during the 16th century. From 18th century onwards, Bratislava emerged as an important centre of the Slovak National Revival (Slovak national and cultural movement). In the late 18th century, the city witnessed flourishing economy and construction of many baroque buildings.

Popular Places and Attractions:
There are lots of significant tourist attractions in Bratislava. Take for instance the Bratislava Castle, a point of pride for the people of Slovakia. Built in the 10th century, the Bratislava Castle now serves as a museum and a major tourist attraction. Another popular tourist attraction in Bratislava is Michalska brana (St. Michael’s Gate). This standing gate and tower was initially constructed in Gothic style but was re-adorned in the 17th century.

Bratislava’s streetscape is well marked by Grassalkovich Palace, Slovakia’s response to the White House. Preserving the complicated and rich history of Bratislava is the Old Town Hall that now features a city museum. Stara radnica (Old Town Hall) is another popular tourist attraction in Bratislava. One should also not miss a visit to Dom sv Martina (St. Martin’s Cathedral), a gothic-styled cathedral that served as a church for coronation of kings from the 16th century to 19th century.

Other must-see places at Bratislava are Primatial Palace, House of the Good Sheperd, New Bridge, etc.

Getting Around in Bratislava:
The extensive public transport system of Bratislava makes it easy for the tourists to travel from one part to another in the city. Other means of public transportation in Bratislava are trams and taxi. One has to pay hefty fines for travelling without a ticket in Bratislava, so a good guide is to keep some change handy to pay your fare.
