Budva – Enjoy the Sun and Sand in Montenegro
Budva, the coastal town of Montenegro is also known as “Montenegrin Miami”. It is Montenegro’s most famous tourist resort and is marked by vibrant nightlife and sandy beaches.
History
Budva is amongst Adriatic coast’s oldest settlements with a history more than 25 centuries old. It was found by Cadmus, a Phoenician hero who was exiled from Thebes. He and Harmonia, his wife arrived here with their oxen which mean bous in Greek and hence, the name Budva was derived. It was also ruled by the Greeks and Romans for quite a long time. It was inhabited by slaves in the 6th century. From then on, Budva was ruled by Doclean kings, Crnojevici, Venetians, Turks, Austria, France and Russia. It suffered many fatalities during World War II.
Popular Places and Attractions
Budva’s old town is located on a little peninsula and is a perfect representation of its rich cultural heritage. It is marked by squares, narrow streets and popular buildings like the fortress and its famous walls and the churches of Sv. Trojicas, Sv. Bogorodica, Sv. Sava and Sv. Ivan. The monasteries of Stanjevici, Podostrog, Gradiste and Rezevici are important religious and historic monuments in Budva.
Budva’s Roman and Greek necropolises are popular places of tourist attraction. More than 450 graves have been discovered so far. The place also demonstrates various ceramic objects, jewelry and weapons used between 4th century BC and 1st century BC, and between 1st and 2nd century AD, when Budva was under Greek and Roman rule respectively.
Budva’s coast is more than 21 kms long and is home to some of the most beautiful beaches such as Pizana, Slovenska, Richard’s head, Guvance and certain surrounding ones like Perazica Do, Buljarice, Sveta Nedjelja and Lucice. The islands of Sveta Nedjelja and Katic are especially popular amongst diving enthusiasts. The town cum hotel of Sveti Stefan is very near to most of these beaches and is famous for its rare plants, high class service hotels, villas and beautiful beaches.
Getting Around
The best way of exploring Budva is by walking. Some of the most interesting locations are in its alleys, narrow streets, city walls and squares. Beaches can also be easily reached by walking. Public transportation facilities include taxis, taxi boats for exploring the beaches and islands and a mini train. A good
guide for hassle free travel make sure to have some small notes and change handy for paying your fares.
