History
Chisinau was first mentioned in the historical documents of the Moldovan king’s army in 1436. It was essentially a monastery town. The Turks captured the city in the 16th century. A proper development of Chisinau started in 1818. Chisinau was a crucial Russian invasion centre during the war between them and the Turks in 1877. The Romanians held it between 1918 and 1940. It was declared as the Moldavian Soviet Socialist Republic’s capital in 1941. The years after that witnessed a lot of internal uprisings and trouble because of Soviet aggression in the region. After the Soviet disintegrated in 1991, Chisinau was finally declared as the capital of Moldova.

Popular Places and Attractions
There are more than 23 lakes as well as numerous around Chisinau. This is a major reason for Chisinau being considered as the greenest city of Europe.

Cricovo and its wine cellars are a major tourist attraction. Its underground wine streets and rich wine collection makes the experience extremely enjoyable. If you have a penchant for wines, this is the place to be.

The Stephen cel Mare Park and its monument are popular tourist destinations. The park contains a bronze monument built in memory of the Moldavian leader, Stephen cel Mare. The City hall building is another beautiful structure in Chisinau. Its tower has a big clock which recites Moldavian hymns every hour. The Ethnological museum and the National Museum of History contain rich artefacts depicting the country’s traditions and history.

The Saharna River, located in the vicinity of Chisinau, offers beautiful scenery containing canyons having more than 30 cascades and rapids. The Soroca fortress, which is more than 5 centuries old, is also located here.

Chisinau is completely surrounded by land full of vineyard. This makes it a famous destination for conducting wine tours. The city’s cognac and beer have received worldwide recognition. The city also has a vibrant nightlife scene. Cocktail lounges, discos, bars, cabarets and bubs can be found in a number of city nightclubs. The music played in these clubs is also very good. Some other places for entertainment are the Outdoor Crafts and Arts market on the street of Stefan cel Mare and the city theatre, classical concerts, opera and ballet.
