Cirali – A Peaceful Weekend Getaway
Cirali, an agricultural town in southwest Turkey is a treat for travellers with its beach, valleys, seas and ancient ruins. A peaceful atmosphere and beautiful flora and fauna is sure to take your breath away.
History
The region’s history goes back to 100 B.C when it was first recorded by the Lycians. The region used to be often attacked for capturing people as slaves. The Romans finally defeated the pirates in 78 B.C but were faced with a new challenge from the Arabian attackers because of which the region suffered substantial damage. Rulers from Venice, Rhodes and Geneva also unsuccessfully tried to resurrect the region. The Turkoman clans also made this attempt by rushing people to this region during late 11th century A.D but the region was lost for good after the 15th century.
Popular Places and Attractions
The 3.2 Km long Cirali beach is its biggest attraction. The beach is marked by cliffs on both its ends and is surrounded by beautiful mountains. It is also one of those rare nesting sites where loggerhead turtles of the Mediterranean come out for nesting. During winters, the Cirali shore plays host to three streams of water joining the sea. The nearby Ulupinar region is also blessed with creeks and rivers.
Olympos, an ancient city belonging to Hellinistic times and Chimeira Mountains is located near Cirali. Methane gas leaking from the splits between the limestone and serpentine rock structures of the region is responsible for this eternal fire. It is also an important contributor to the legend of Khimeira, a fire-breathing monster belonging to the times of Bellorophon. Some other popular attractions are Eko Reptile Park, Demre Myra ruins, Kekova Island and Sunken City.
