City Dangriga- Deep Rooted in History and Culture
Dangriga is the largest city in Southern
Belize and is the capital of the Stann Creek. Home of the unique ethnic group of the Garifuna, the descendents of shipwrecked slaves, this city is famous for their religious and musical traditions and the local music band of the Punta Rock. The wooden houses on perches and a tranquil milieu set up the right backdrop for a relaxing holiday.
History
The earliest settlement of Garinagu in this city dates back to 1832 before the British made it a colony and named this city British Honduras. Logging and wood industry attracted investors from all over, which made the city flourishing. The Garífuna culture is well preserved even now in this city, which takes its name from the a Garífuna word that translates into "standing waters"
Popular Places
Though it is a coastal city, Dangriga has no beaches or water sports to its credit. Island hopping is a popular activity in this city as there are three islands nearby including Man-o-War Caye, Southwater Caye, and Tobacco Caye, which are perfect for scuba diving, snorkelling or fishing.
Walk down the memory lane to explore the Maya ruins in the Mayflower Archaeological Reserve. The most important nature reserve in this city, is a must see spot. Spreading over 400 square kilometres along the eastern slopes of Maya mountains, this nature park was founded for the preservation of the jaguars. Nature trail in this ancient forest land is a popular activity not only among tourists but research scientists as well.
