About ESSAOUIRA

City Essaouira – Enjoy the Relaxing Atmosphere and Holiday Feel

Used as the backdrop for the Orson Wells’ classic Othello and an isolated city on the Atlantic Coast of Morocco, Essaouira is known for its pleasant and relaxing atmosphere. Surrounded by sand beaches and sand dunes, the city is a suitable choice for those feeling a need of a holiday break.

Accommodation.
you can choose from youth hostels, budget hotels and guesthouse to luxury hotels and apartments.

History
Formally known as Mogador, the city of Essaouira has been inhabited since the pre-historic times. A trading post was established here in the 5th century BC by a Carthaginian navigator. In the beginning of the 1st century AD, a factory manufacturing the famous purple dye was constructed here. In the beginning of the 16th century, the Portuguese fortified the city. The forces from France, the Netherlands, Spain and England wee unsuccessful in establishing their control in the city. The present day city started building in the 18th century under the rule of Mohammed III. It was then that the name of the city was changed from Souira to Essaouira.

Popular Places
The Medina in the city is a UNESCO World Heritage site and among the most popular visiting places. The ramparts built on the cliff are also worth visiting. You may also like to visit the port which usually remains crowded with fishing boats. Some popular hammams like the Hammam de la Kasbah and the Hammam Mounia are also there in the city. The grave of Rabbi Chaim Pinto is visited as a pilgrimage site by people.

Getting Around
You should be on foot to explore the narrow lanes of the medina. Petit taxis and horse-driven carriages are the preferred mediums to get around the new town. Motorbikes and cars can also be hired. Prefer to have a professional guide if you are visiting the city for the first time.

Places of Entertainment
You can visit the city in June to attend the Gnaoua Festival of World Music. Essaouira is also known to have several small art galleries. The beach in the city, though not ideal for swimming, is perfect for windsurfing, kite surfing and many other water sports. The Village of Diabat can be visited to enjoy horse rides. Walking tours to the Argan Woods, the Thuya Forests and the dunes are among the most popular activities. Mint tea is a popular drink in the city and one can also taste variety of cuisines in the city’s restaurants. The shops along the narrow streets sell marquetry boxes, spices, beads, rugs, silver jewellery, antiques and handmade bags.

Currency
The city has Moroccan Dirham as its official currency. Coins are available as 5, 10 & 20 santimat, ½, 1, 2, 5 & 10 dirham and banknotes as 10, 20, 50, 100 & 200 dirham. Get more information about the currency exchange rate from the news online.
