City Foz Do Iguacu in Brazil - The City of Iguaçuenses

Around 650 kilometers of Parana’s capital city, Curitiba, is located another city in the same state, Parana. It is the 4th largest city in the state, also being 11th largest city of Southern Brazil. Iguaçuenses is the name given to the inhabitants of the city.

History
Quedas de Santa Maria was the name given to the falls that were found by Spanish explorer Cabeza de Vaca in 1549. It was changed to Quedas Del Iguazu, native from the once inhabitants of the place, Guarani Indians. It came under Paraguay until 1860, after which, due to the loss of Triple Frontier War, it came under the reins of Brazil. It is still the Westernmost City of the Parana State, bordering Paraguay.

In 1910, it was given a villa, or village status, the name was changed to Vila Iguazu. In 1914, subsequently, it was recognized as a city. In 1945, the city name was changed to its present name.

Popular Places and Monuments
Iguacu Falls are the biggest attraction, located just outside the city. Tourist agencies arrange regular trips to the place. Though the Falls on the Brazilian side are lesser than those on the other side, they are still no less a wonder in beauty. Parque das Aves is a bird park, which can be visited on self-guided tours, which can be arranged through various agencies. It has different types of exotic birds, some endemic to the region, one can hold the birds, and take pictures. However, one should never harm the birds, and poaching is strictly banned. Also, some birds may harm people, being wild. World’s largest power plant, Itaipu Dam, can be visited only on tours through R13 highway.

Getting Around
Municipality doesn’t run any public transport, but has contracted four independent private companies to run buses on their behest. The fares have been set by the municipality, however. Walking is also an option on short distance routes, which is often a better way to travel to discover places more than just popular tourist spots of a region.
