About HAGATNA

Visit Hagatna for a Holiday Filled with Peace and Tranquility

Guam’s second smallest island, both in terms of population and area and capital, Hagatna was formerly known as Agana and is located on the mouth of the Hagatna River. Bounded by the sandy beaches of Agana Bay to the north, the Agana River to the east and a cliff to the south, the village of Hagatna is home to several high-rise office buildings and commercial centers.

History of Hagatna:
Prior to the colonization of Guam by the Spanish, the village of Hagatna was of much prominence. The U.S. naval bombardment heavily damaged the city of Agana during the World War II which hindered the development of the city beyond repair and was also the epicenter of the race riot between black and white servicemen in 1944. It was occupied solely by Chamorro people in ancient times.

Popular Places and Attractions:
The abundant historic sites of Hagatna serve as major tourist attractions. Buildings left over from the Spanish rule can be seen and appreciated in the Plaza de Espana, a bustling business district of Guam, located near the cathedral of the Archdiocese of Agana.

Visitors can have a look at pre-Spanish stone pillars, referred to as Latte Stones, in the Latte Park located near Plaza de Espana. These lattes were transformed to Hagatna from the Me’pu, southern interior of Guam. Included in the historic houses of Hagatna is the Lujan House which was once a private school. Built in 1915, this structure is also known as Guam Institute.
