History
The Mauryan Emperor Ashoka is thought to have founded Kashmir, which was once a seat of Buddhism. Later Muslims and Sikhs ruled this state. In 1947 when India became independent the then the ruling monarch of Kashmir Hari Singh, chose to remain with India though a small portion of it was annexed by force to its territory by Pakistan.
