City Kaunas – Soak Up The True Lithuanian Flavour
Kaunas, the erstwhile temporary capital of Lithuania is its second largest city in
Lithuania. Located at the meeting point of the two largest Lithuanian rivers, the Nemunas and the Neris, it is an interesting tourist destination. The old baroque structures and the sixteenth century merchants’ houses add a quixotic charm to this laid back city.
History
The earliest settlement of this city dates back to the 1030. In the 13th century, a stone wall was built to ward off the threats from the Teutonic Knights. Nonetheless in 1362, the town was captured by the Teutonic Knights and the castle was destroyed. Later on Kaunas began to flourish thank to its strategic location between the trade routes and a river port. In 1441 Kaunas joined the Hanseatic League and by the 16th century,
Kaunas became one of the best developed towns in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. The Russian Empire took over the city in 1795 after the final partition of the Polish-Lithuanian state. In 1940 Kaunas was annexed by the Soviet Union as part of the Lithuanian SSR.

Touted as the heart of the Lithuanian culture, Kaunas offers something special for everyone. From an exciting history and culture to lively bars and cafes and shopping options at Laisves Avenue, it offers an interesting ensemble of the old and the new. The Trakai Castle, home to over 30 families of the Turkish ethnic group of Karaim is an interesting destination. It is the only castle island in the whole of the Eastern Europe. Catch up with the many live concerts and festivals that are organized in the castle all round the year. There are many architectural edifices like the old St. Michael church in the Old Town area.
Getting around:
Trolley buses, private mini buses and public transport buses are the most popular options to go around the city, a good guide is to keep some small notes and coins handy for the fares. Kaunas could be easily explored on foot as it allows you to fully enjoy the flair and flavour of this city.

The Vilnius amphitheatre set amidst enchanting hills and groves is another attraction of this city. Kaunas has plenty for everybody to see and experience.
