Famous for its intact Renaissance-era city walls,
Lucca is located in the heart of Tuscany on river Serchio, and is the capital of the Province of Lucca. Its medieval churches, spectacular towers and other historic sites make it one of the finest tourist centres in Italy.
History:
After being founded by the Etruscans,
Lucca became a Roman colony in 180 B.C. It is known to be the second largest Italian city to have its own republican constitution to remain independent over centuries together. It was taken over by Napoleon in 1805 and finally became a part of Tuscany in 1847.

Lucca has a rich and attractive mix of churches, galleries, museums and cobble-stoned streets. To start with, San Michele Church in Foro offers an attractive sight with its stunning facade. Duomo de San Martino is another cathedral in
Lucca that has an interesting structure too. Located at San Martino square, the most significant art work in Duomo de San Martino are the 13th century carvings. Cathedral Museum and church of Santissimi Giovanni e Reparata are other places of interest.
Tomb of Ilaria Del Caretto offers significant art value to the tourists. Created by famous sculptor Jacopo della Quercia, this is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful statues in Italy. The Botanical Garden and Villa Bottini are the right places for a lush green and picturesque sight. Santa Maria Forisportam, a 13th century church, is also a charming place to be.
