City Luxor in Egypt- Touted as the World’s Greatest Open Air Museum

A city in Upper Egypt and capital of Luxor Governorate, the population of City Luxor in Egypt has crossed 400,000 already covering an area of around 416 square kilometres. It is the site for the ancient Egyptian city of Thebes and has been nicknamed as “World’s greatest open air museum”.

Accommodation
Apart from the luxury hotels, clean and comfortable budget hotel accommodation are available in the city. Apart from these there are friendly guest house and youth hostels as well as bread and breakfast are also there. Most of them are nice place to stay and enjoyable with all the basic amenities available. In addition there are some accommodations where breakfast is not part of the deal. Some of the cheap hotels also dispense with breakfast facilities in lieu of lower prices.

Brief History
Ancient city of Thebes and great capital of Egypt, it was considered to be the city of the sceptre. Greeks and Romans called it Thabai that was the city of 100 gates and is also known as Southern Helipolis. Importance of the city started in 11th dynasty when it grew into a thriving city. In 1998 a bridge was opened connecting the two banks.

Getting Around
Guide books are also there providing all information on the hassle free travel in the city. Movement is best with taxis around. Extensive rail services are available in the state. Extensive ferry services are available for movement from one bank to other. Before availing taxi services it is good to enquire on the fares payable.

Popular Places and Monuments
Ruins of the temple complex of Karnak and Luxor are both located within the premises of the city. Monuments, temples, and tombs lie on the West Bank Necropolis immediately opposite the Nile River. Valley of the Kings and Valley of the Queens are two of the greatest attractions in the city. Thousands of tourists visit the city every year and it constitutes a major part of the city’s economy. Luxor temple, museum, Karnak temple, Winter Palace hotel, Luxor International airport on the east bank; and valley of the kings, queens, Medinet Habu, Ramesseum Deir el Medina, Tombs of the Nobles, Deir el Bahri, Malkata, and colossi of Memmon are major attractions in the city.

Currencies
Egyptian pound is the currency in the city. Remaining updated viewing the currency exchange news on the electronic and print media and Internet is advisable. Currently one Euro is equivalent to 7.31 Egyptian Pound and one US Dollar is equivalent to 5.598 Egyptian Pound but the rates can vary from time to time in a highly volatile exchange market.
