City Mombasa – Oldest Settlement of East African Region

History
The ruler Shehe Mvita is known to have formed first settlement at the Mombasa Island. The Thenashara Taifa families, popularly known as the Twelve Nations, were the original occupants of the region. Right from the 12th century, the city acted as a famous trading centre for gold, ivory and spices. In the 15th century, the Portuguese explorer Vasco De Gama visited Mombasa and the city came under the Portuguese rule. By the end of the 17th century, the city came under the rule of the Sultanate of Oman. The British East Africa Protectorate also became powerful in the city in the 19th century. It was finally in 1963 that Mombasa became the part of independent Kenya.

Old Town is among the popular places to visit in Mombasa. This part of the city has white tall buildings and mosques, representing the Swahili architecture.
