Nizhniy Novgorod – Have the Pleasure of Historical Sightseeing
Nizhniy Novgorod is one of the largest and economically powerful cities of
Russia, located in the Volga-Vyatka region on the bank of River Volga. Previously known as Gorky, the city is a popular tourist destination in the region and ranks among 100 UNESCO cities that offer rich historical and cultural worth.
History:
Grand Duke George II of Russia founded Obran Osh as a hill fort in 1221 that was soon named as Nizhniy Novgorod. The name translates to ‘Lower Newtown’ and it distinguishes the city from older Novgorod. Mordvin and Mongols attacked the city and latter were successful to capture small part of the city. In 1264, the city was incorporated into the Vladimir-Suzdal principality and into Muscovy in the year 1392. In 1408, the city was destroyed by Tatars, but was refurbished and Kremlin was constructed to prevent further attacks from external forces.
The city developed economically as well as culturally from the 16th century to the end of the 18th century. The city also emerged as a trade destination by the mid of the 19th century. After experiencing the events like the Russian Revolution and World War I, the city was renamed Gorky and was called by this name till 1991.

Nizhniy Novgorod is full of hundreds of monuments that represent the cultural and architectural values of the city. Apart from that, one can find huge number of churches like the Virgin’s Nativity Church, the Church of Our Lady of Smolensk, the Assumption Church on St Elijah's Hill and the parish churches of the Holy Wives. Also, there are other sites like the Saviour Cathedral, the Shrine of the Old Believers, the Wooden Chapel of the Intercession and the Sennaya Square Mosque.
Pechersky Ascension Monastery and Annunciation monastery are other two important tourist sites in the city. The Kremlin and wonderful views of the River Volga are also worth watching.
Getting Around:
The public transport in the city consists of buses, trams, trolley buses and subway. One can also think of hiring a taxi to get around the city. A good
guide is to keep some small notes handy to pay for your journey.
Places of Entertainment:
Museum of History, Kremlin Museum of History and Architecture and many other museums serve as entertainment venues in the city. A number of theatres like Dilizhans, Actor House, Pushkin Opera and Ballet Theatre and State Puppet Theatre can also be considered to have fun. Various popular shopping malls are located in all parts of the city. One can eat at variety of restaurants and cafes that can be easily found in the city.
