Novi Sad – A Charming City of Serbia

Capital of the province of Vojvodina and Serbia’s second largest city, Novi Sad lies on both the banks of the river Danube and is considered to be the financial, cultural and industrial center of Serbia. It is widely known for its neo-classical and baroque buildings and churches.

History of Novi Sad:
The town of Novi Sad was reconstructed by the Byzantines by the end of the 5th century. It was later conquered by Gepids, Franks, Bulgarians, etc and was ruled by the Kingdom of Hungary between the 10th and the 12th century. The region slipped under the Ottoman rule between 1526 and 1687. Novi Sad was considered as the largest city of the world during the 18th and 19th centuries.

Popular Places and Attractions:
Novi Sad is known for its EXIT festival, the biggest music festival of the region. There are lots of museums and art galleries spread across the city. The most popular museum in Novi Sad is the Museum of Vojvodina while Gallery of Matica Srpska is the biggest gallery of the city.

Other places worth a visit at Novi Sad are the Petrovaradin Fortress, the City Hall, the Bishop’s Palace, the Banovina White House, the Square of Newly Weds, Dunavska, Strand, Zmaj Jovina and Laze Teleckog Street, etc. Being home to several international events, Novi Sad has gained tremendous popularity as a tourist hub.

Getting Around in Novi Sad:
Buses in Serbia carry bulk of the domestic traffic and Novi Sad is no exception. It has two bus stations facilitating international travel. The Central Bus Station is well connected with all the parts of the town through the network of public transport. A good guide is to have some change handy to pay your fares.

Places of Entertainment:
For shopaholics, Sad Novi Bazaar is an attractive option. A modern shopping center, it offers a lot of variety in its four floor area. For a local shopping experience, one can crawl into the many little passages on the Main Street and Dunavska Street. The best equipped market in Novi Sad is the Liman Market which is a one stop point for all consumer goods and fresh food.

For a one of its kind dining and wining experience, one can visit the various local restaurants and pubs in Novi Sad. Gusan, located at the centre of city, is a relaxing restaurant-pub that offers Vojvodinian cuisine and different kinds of beer. Other places to taste the lip smacking food of Novi Sad are Doria, Aqua Doria, Absolut, Kuca Mala, Plava Frajia, etc.
