Novosibirsk – Meet the Siberian City with a Young Look

Novosibirsk is the largest Siberian city and the third largest in Russia. Located in the southwest of the Siberian Federal District, the city serves as a business and scientific centre of the country and is also an admirable tourist destination. Due to constant refurbishment, the city has been able to obtain a young and attractive face.

History:
Novosibirsk was founded with the name of Novonikolayevsk, near the River Ob in 1893. The construction of Transportation Bridge and Turkistan-Siberian Railway enhanced the importance of the city manifolds. The place obtained the status of being a town and ability to form government in the year 1907. The commercial and industrial progress of the city continued till the Russian Civil War. However, during the course of the war, it was one of the Russian cities to experience huge destruction.

The city was renamed Novosibirsk, meaning New Siberian City, in 1926, as it started recovering under the leadership of Lenin. Industrial development was restarted by Stalin and continued to make Novosibirsk one of the most important cities in Siberia. 

Popular Places:
Lenin’s Square is indeed the best tourist place to visit in Novosibirsk. One can find the grey-coloured monument of the legendary Russian leader installed at this place. Novosibirsk Art Museum and Local Studies Museum are other two important sites that can be visited to explore the golden history of the region. A number of monuments associated with World War II can also be seen in all parts of the city.

Novosibirsk Zoo is another well-known spot in the city. A number of endangered species, along with other animals can be seen here. 

Getting Around:
Marshrutkas are the public transport facilities that can be chosen to move in all parts of the city. Metro service is also there and one can also hire a taxi. A good guide is to keep some money handy to pay for your journey, small notes are best.

Many entertainment venues are located in different parts of the city, making it a wonderful place for the tourists. The Opera and Ballet House, Novosibirsk Regional Puppet Theatre, Novosibirsk Art Gallery, the Youth Theatre Globus and Philharmonic Orchestra are among the notable entertainment venues in the city. A number of nightclubs, discotheques, bars and other spots can be visited to be the part of amazing nightlife offered by the city. Novosibirsk is also admired for accommodating a number of famous shopping malls that provide excellent shopping opportunities to the customers.
