About PAMUKKALE

Pamukkale – Cotton Castle Blessed with Natural Formations

Located in the Denizli Province of south-west Turkey, Pamukkale is known for its white sparkling castles. Listed in the World Heritage List of UNESCO, the place is popular among the tourists for offering peace and harmony. Nearness to the River Menderes valley further makes the city a wonderful destination to visit.

History
Not less than a natural wonder for Turkey, Pamukkale has been known in the history as a natural spa, offering baths and open pools as its greatest highlights. Famously called Hierapolis, the city is believed to be founded in the 2nd century BC by Eumenes II, one of the Pergamum kings. The city is named after Hiera, who was the wife of Telephos, the founder of Pergamum dynasty.

It was in 133 BC that the city was united with the Roman Empire, along with other parts of the Pergamum kingdom. After an earthquake in 17 AD, the city was redeveloped in the form of a Roman Settlement. Soon it became one of the richest cities under the Roman Empire. After the division of the Roman Empire, the city went to the Byzantine Empire, where it became the capital of Phrygia. The Turks invaded the city in the 11th century, after which the Seljuk forces constantly attacked the city. Another earthquake hit the area, destroying all man-made structures and leaving behind the natural sites. In 1887, excavations began to discover the city again and since then, it appeared as an important tourist destination in Turkey.
