Podstrana – Ambience of Mediterranean and Abundance of Vegetation

Podstrana is a small city located between Zrnovnica rivulet and Mutogras hill in the Split-Dalmatian County of Croatia. Blessed with abundant Mediterranean vegetation, the city has become a popular tourist destination of the region. Podstrana is also one of the Croatian cities to offer exotic sea beaches and various fun-filled activities.

History:
Podstrana has been known from the ancient times. Illyrian tribes were the first people inhabitants to settle down in the region. The Romans visited the place and established their settlements in the region. In the 7th century, the Slavic tribes also occupied an important part of the area. After this, the place was occupied by the Croatian rulers, who were in constant conflict with sea pirates and the Venice rulers.

During the Middle Ages, Podstrana became a part of the Klis community. In 1444, it was integrated with the Poljica Principality. Turkish rulers occupied the place in the 16th and the 17th century, however, the Venice rule was re-imposed by the end of the 17th century. In the beginning of the 19th century, the place was captured by French armies. Soon, the national identity of the place was recognized and the French rule was abolished.

Dioklecian Palace and the State of Gregory of Nin are the top attractions offered by the region around Podstrana. A number of historic and archeological sites can be visited in the city. St Martin Church is a wonderful tourist spot and one can find the remains of St George church to be another interesting site to visit.

What makes Podstrana truly amazing is the presence of rich Mediterranean flora, including pine woods and tamarinds. Mountain sceneries and spectacular beaches contribute towards the glory of the city. One can spend many hours on the beautiful beaches, away from the hectic routine life.
