City Sao Paulo: Brazil’s Largest City
Sao Paulo is Brazil’s largest city, and 7th largest metropolitan city of the world. City is the capital of Sao Paulo State, the State being most populous state of the country, along with being the richest city of
Brazil.
History
The city was founded by Tibirissa' Chief and the Jesuit missionaries Manuel da Nóbrega and José de Anchieta on January 25, 1554. In 1711, it officially became a city. Though, only in 19th century, did it have an economic growth and an appreciable growth at that, powered by its coffee production and exports. In the 20th century, coffee trade started to decline, and in 1929, it came to a new low, with the crash of New York Stock Exchange. After World War II, when city was in trouble, local industrials started investing, which brought new immigrants, mainly Italians. The economy again started booming, but because other states offered tax-free status to industries, it started losing on the industrial grounds a bit. Though problems came and went, Sao Paulo is still one of the most important industrial business and industrial hub in Brazil.
Popular Places and Attractions
There are lots of museum in the place. One can check various museums which offer insights into cultural heritage of the city, state, and country. Banespa Tower has an observation deck on 34th floor, to have a wonderful view of the city, at 160m above the level of the city. A small museum is at the roof, which doesn’t have any entry fee.
Getting Around
There are various options for getting around. Bilhete Único are contact-less cards, which are important if you intend to use public transport, as they can be used in trains, metro, and bus. Metro or subway train system is one of the most efficient, clean and safe transport systems. CPTM or Commuter Trains are connected from Metro to other parts of city, not covered by Metro. Buses are also available, and have a wide network.
Other than them, there are hired cars, taxis, motorbikes, and bicycles for transport. You can hire them at standard rates. A
guide would help in hiring taxi or car, or getting one along the city.
Places for Entertainment
Theatres carry plays in Portuguese mostly, with some places carrying plays in English, German, and French etc. One can go to the zoo, or take a ride along the theme park. There are 90,000 events an year, including Carnival and Gay Parade. There is Biennial of Sao Paulo, which takes place once in two years. Sao Paulo Jockey Club has two bars, and a couple of posh restaurants.
