Suceava – Place with Hills and Meadows

Suceava is located in the north-eastern part of Romania and is better known as the capital of Suceava County. The city has a diverse geography, featuring hills and meadows and is a good destination for tourists to enjoy short vacations.

History:
The name of the Suceava City is believed to be borrowed from Hungarian word, Szűcsvár that means the city of furriers. Moldavian rulers were among the first ones to rules this part of Romania. In fact, the city served for long as the capital of Moldavian state from the 14th to the 16th century. After this, the city was joined with Iasi, another city in Romania. The city came under the rule of the Habsburg Monarchy in the last quarter of the 18th century. The rule continued till the early years of the 20th century. It was at the end of the First World War that the city was given to the Greater Romania.

Popular Places:
Suceava fortress, which played an important role in the history of the city, is among the top tourist destinations offered by Suceava. Saint George’s Church, which is listed in the World Heritage List of UNESCO, is also located in the city. Apart from this, one can find various other churches in the city, including Mirauti Church, Church of Saint Demetrius and Church of Saint John the Baptist.

A number of museums are also accommodated by the city of Suceava. The Bucovina History Museum and the Bucovina Village Museum are among the most visited tourist sites of the city. Others are Bucovina Ethnographic Museum and the National History Museum. Apart from that, one can also visit the Astronomical Observatory located in the city.

One interesting idea is to visit the world-class painted monasteries that are located at a short distance from the city. Princely Citadel on the top of the hill offers a wonderful site of attractions for the tourists.

Getting Around:
Train and bus services can be used to get around the city. One can also prefer to hire a taxi or a car on rent for the same. A good guide is to have small notes ready to pay for your travel.
