History of Taipei
Prior to eighteenth century, the region of Taipei basin was home to Ketagalan tribes. In 1886, Taipei was declared as the provincial capital of Taiwan, which was proclaimed a province of China. Taipei became the official capital of Taiwan much later in 1894. The city clinched the status of a province on July 1, 1967.

Popular Places and Attractions
The Presidential Office Building located in the Zhongzheng District of Taipei is a must see place. A classic example of traditional Taipei architecture, this building has been the executive branch of government of Taiwan since 1950. National Chian Kai-shek Memorial Hall is another interesting place bordered by a wonderful park and a square that houses National Theatre and the National Concert Hall.

The National Palace Museum, a favorite place of many, houses a huge number of artefacts and owns compilations of Chinese relics. There are more than 700,000 items available for the tourists and locals to see and enjoy. Located in the south-west region of Taipei, Botanical Gardens are a perfect place to enjoy and relax with family. Other exciting places worth a visit in Taipei are Fu Hsing Dramatic Arts Academy, Taipei Fine Arts Museum, Martyr’s Shrine, Chungsham Building, Lugshan Temple, etc. Taipei 101, world’s tallest building, is a joy to watch.

Getting Around in Taipei

The dazzling night markets of Taipei are a perfect source of entertainment for the tourists. The most popular night market in Taipei is the Shilin Night Market.
