History:
Torquay is in existence from times unknown. It has traces of Paleolithic times and is situated in the South West county of Devon. With the advent of better transportation over the years, the place grew to be one of the major resorts in south coast England and people travel from all over to relax and enjoy Torquay.

Popular places:
Torre Abbey, one of the historic buildings in the region, retraces visitors to many centuries. With almost 800 years of history, the building has evolved from being monastery, home to wealthy families in the region and to the current official residence of the Mayor. The building itself is an impressive piece of work and the extensive collection of pictures, glass, silver and Torquay pottery in its art galleries draw many visitors. The park with its rock garden around the mansion offers some splendid views. Kents Cavern unleashes the Paleolithic times and is the treasured Stone Age cave in Britain. Torquay is home to the famous crime writer, Agatha Christie. A glimpse into her fascinating life can be had at the museum which displays her photographs, memorabilia etc.

The beautiful village of Cockington with its amazing lakes, thatched cottages, and meadows is just marvellous. The low roofed Forge in the centre of the village, which is in existence from the 14th century, is the most photographed building of England. Cockington court and its splendid parks are a must visit and visitors can also get an insight into the making of pottery, glass and needlework. Many miniature buildings and structures at Babbacombe model village give a feel of England’s past. Stroll along the Pier and the Marina can be very refreshing. Sea life and Bird centre of “Living Coast”, also known as ‘The big hairnet’ is one of the new attractions. Besides amazing collection of Penguins, Seals, Puffins and many birds, the great sea views from here attract many visitors. Many lively beaches add to the charm of the place.
