City Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia – Economic Centre of the Country

Ulaanbaatar, capital and largest city of Mongolia has a population of more than one million. Located on the Valley of Tuul River, it is the cultural, financial, and industrial heart of the country.

3 Star, 4 Star, and luxury hotels are available at Ulaanbaatar. These provide the visitors with all the modern facilities. In addition, there are several budget hotels, youth hostels, bed and breakfast accommodations, resorts and guest houses. Ordinarily the accommodations located a little away from the centre of the city are comparatively cheaper. History
Founded originally in 1639, the city was permanently settled in 1778 and became one of the major manufacturing centres in the twentieth century. Initially a mobile monastery town, it experienced the revolution in 1911. Originally named Urga the city assumed the name Ulaanbaatar or “red hero” in 1924. Westernization followed with completion of Trans Mongolian Railway in 1956. After the 1990 democratic revolutions the city transformed into market economy and converted into manufacturing centre of the country.  Recent win of the Mongolian People’s Revolutionary Party saw riots conducted by opposition parties in 2008.

Getting Around – Helpful Travel Guide
Chinggis Khaan international airport is located 18 kilometres southwest of Ulaanbaatar. Ulaanbaatar is connected by road to most of the major cities in Mongolia but the roads are unpaved. Trans Mongolian Railway is still the major medium of transportation. Primary transit system of buses and secondary transit system of microbuses operate in the city under municipal regulations. International trains to Ulaanbaatar are available from both China and Russia and rented car service is also there.

Places of Entertainment
Restaurants in Ulaanbaatar offer both Mongolian as well as international cuisine. Bars and discos host the main nightlife in the country for visitors. Many museums and art galleries, cabarets, cinemas, and theatres provide desired entertainment. Enjoying festivals like Naadam and shopping around are excellent means of enjoying tours and travels in Ulaanbaatar.  National Museum of Mongolian history and Zanabazar Mesuem of Fine arts are two of the best places for entertainment.

Language Spoken
Khalka Mongol is the official language of people of Ulaanbaatar. However Russian is widely understood. Current trend shows popularity of Chinese, Japanese, besides the European languages.

Currency
Tugrug, the official currency in Mongolia is naturally the currency of Ulaanbaatar. Mongolian national news and the currency conversion sites on the Internet could be viewed for learning the latest exchange rate of currencies.
