Wengen – Family Holiday Away from the Hustle Bustle

Like many other small villages located in Bernese Highlands in the Central Switzerland, Wengen is another popular tourist destination of the region. Visited by tourists round the year, the village offers a car-free peaceful environment in the laps of nature.

History:
Wengen doesn’t have a long history to mention and this is true about other tourist destinations of the region. The village finds its first official mention in various documents related to the 13th century. However, it was in the 19th century, when the village gained importance as a tourist hub, due to the construction of a number of hotels and ski resorts. Wengernalpbahn, the world’s longest cogwheel railway started running through the village that further extended its popularity among tourists. In the 20th century, a number of ski races brought Wengen to the notice of people living in various parts of the world.

Popular Places:
It is the natural beauty of the village that grabs the attention of tourists. There are a number of ski resorts that can be visited to enjoy skiing. Even if you are not interested in skiing, you can visit these resorts to explore the wonderful views of the nature. The Downhill Only Club is one of the oldest ski resorts in the village that was founded in the year 1925.

A small protestant church in Wengen is another important tourist spot in the village. The church is surrounded by a small park from where one can enjoy the spectacular view of Eiger, Moench, Jungfrau and Breithorn.

Getting Around:
Wengen has no car, bus or train service and thus, walking is the best way to move around the village. However, no tourists will be disappointed to walk on foot after watching the inviting beauty of the place. Electric vehicle transfer services are offered by some of the hotels to make transportation easy from station to accommodation, if you need some extra help to guide you around just ask a local or the receptionist at your accommodation.

As mentioned above, there are many ski resorts in the village of Wengen, which publicize skiing as a fun-filled activity round the year. One can also follow the walking routes to closely view the rich beauty offered by nature. Hiking is another activity that can be participated in. Swimming, ice-skating and curling are some of the other activities available for tourists. A number of shops that sell electronic and gift items can be located in various parts of the village.
